Do you ever wonder how one photographer makes it but another does not? Well there are no secrets to why one makes it and the other does not. Sometimes people just get lucky or are in the right place at the right time or put themselves in the right place at the right time.
I am not a huge believer in all out luck. Sure you can get “lucky” from time to time but I think we make our own luck. The choices we make the chances we take can help us feel like we are lucky.
What is this post all about? A teenage photographer in Europe who has only been shooting pictures for a few years found herself with the cover photo to a Maroon 5 Album. How did this happen, did she call them and submit her work, nope. She placed her own self portraits on Flickr and someone on the Maroon 5 so happened to find her images and felt the concept fit what they were looking for.
After contacting her twice, the first time she didn’t think it was real Maroon 5’s management asked if she could retake one of her shots. She ended up taking the photos as a self portrait. The band liked the image so much they decided to use it on their latest album “hands all over”.
This was not just a one time job and done, she has picked up jobs for the X Factor and other companies. The point I am getting at is you have to put yourself out there, you have to be discoverable, you have to give people a reason to talk to you. If she never posted her “art” she would not have been found. I know it sounds simple but there are no secrets to being successful.
I am in no way downplaying the photographers work, I think its great and her success is well deserved.
Here is a short story about a Hockey Official named Ian Walsh. He is a local ref who I know very well from my years of officiating. Ian was an up and coming official who so happened to be in the right place at the right time. An official scout was in the area to see another ref but ended up going to the wrong rink and seeing Ian ref. Turns out Ian had what he was looking for and his path to being an NHL official was underway.
Another thing that can’t go without being said is if Ian was not giving 100% on the ice he would not have caught the attention of this scout. Always put your best work out there, if you feel an image in any way is not strong DO NOT SHARE IT.
I guess what I am trying to say to everyone is get out there, don’t be afraid to post your images online or share them with the world. You never know who is watching and waiting to find the work that you are creating.

jared polin froknowsphoto.com and a lot of photo websites have been posting a story about a young photographer a teenager who got a cover for a maroon 5 album because she posted her pictures on Flickr so there's a lot of things going on here but let's first look at what happened she picked up the camera when she was 15 she started shooting she posted her images on Flickr for the world to see so that she can be discovered or have the better chance of being discovered she put her stuff out there she may never have thought that this would happen but somebody with maroon 5's management was looking around Flickr found these sites they were probably searching something to do with hands being that the name of the album is hands all over and they came across this girl's photos and they contacted her and she didn't think it was real and they contacted her again and then they're like we want you to redo this photo for us and put it on but to consider it for the cover of their new album while she redid it it's a self-portrait you can see the hands all over it and it ended up being the cover of the latest maroon 5 album hands all over but that's not the end of the story from this she's gotten other jobs with x-factor and other places I don't know the exact other jobs that she's picked up but she's gotten magazine gigs and advertising gigs all because she put herself out there now I'm not saying that if you put yourself out there you're going to get a job or be successful at it but this just shows you that a teenager anybody can do this anybody can be successful it's not going to happen for everybody but if you don't put yourself out there and you don't try and you don't do these things there's a possibility that you may never end up anywhere but then you may do nothing and you could still end up somewhere you just have to try you really do and I have a quick story that is about the right place at the right time because that is another thing that happens if you're in the right place at the right time that all the stars align and whatever you may get that job it's amazing what she did and it's amazing how she's going to build from there but here's a story about a hockey official named Ian wall he grew up in my area he I wrecked with him his father gave me the first games that I ever officiated but ian is now in the NHL how did this happen well not all by accident but pretty much by accident ian was repping a game and one of the people who go out there to watch officials and grade them to groom them to go up and move up in levels went to the wrong rink he walked into the wrong hockey rink to see he was looking for a different official to go watch well he ended up seeing Ian because he went to the wrong place and from that point on and got put into the path to move his way up to be in the NHL and now he is a full-on NHL official the guy showed up to the wrong place and saw the wrong ref and ended up liking what he saw who knows why this stuff happens sometimes it just happens so you never know how this stuff's going to do put your work out there let people see it don't be worried about people stealing it you want to be seen and the only way to be seen is to be something put yourself out there and then see what happens and also don't forget to execute when they come to you and say can you do this for us and that's it that's sort of a quick tip and a little rant and a little help to push you in the right direction jared polin froknowsphoto.com Ziya
