so if you're thinking about raising your prices and you're wondering how can I start charging clients more that's exactly what we're gonna be talking about in today's video let's jump into it what's going on guys welcome back to the channel my name is Jonathan Moore if you are new here I'm a photographer and a filmmaker and I like to make videos like this where I share resources with other photographers filmmakers creatives and freelancers just like yourself so you like videos like that you're a freelancer you're trying to build a life on your terms and get it how you live make sure that you subscribe to the channel and smack that like button so let's get into the top of good day and we're gonna be talking about how to charge your clients and how to start raising your price when it comes to raising prices this is something I noticed a lot of creatives struggle with because you're talking about your artwork so you want to be able to charge because you take pride in which what you're doing you know you take pride in your craftsmanship and you want to get a fair value but sometimes you don't know how much to charge this can be especially tricky when you're just starting out right you're trying to get your name out there you're trying to get exposure you're trying to build up your your content your portfolio and you want to get compensated fairly but at the same time you don't want to run the risk of you know losing that potential client so this is where I'm gonna jump in and I'm gonna say stop for just a second we're gonna talk about the concepts of perceived that so perceived value is exactly that it's perceived right it's what somebody believes here's an example if you have two pairs of sneakers and they're identical they're exactly the same pair of sneaker and one is $25 and the other is $200 right but they're exactly the same the average person when they're looking at it they're gonna think that the one that's $200 is more valuable than the one that's $25 I mean right obviously is priced more expensively it's gotta be something that's better about this shoe even though they are the exact same shoe it doesn't matter if you spend $200 on that pair of shoes you know you get a pair of sneakers and you know let's say you spend $200 on it you are gonna be taking care of those bad boys you know you're gonna be doing that little you know the stiff sneaker walk when you just get new shoes you don't want to get them all messed up no not on the other hand if you get to $25 pair of sneakers it's like whatever it was $25 I can get eight pairs of those for the $200 pair of sneakers so you know these that's gonna be my kicking my runaround shoes I don't care if these things get messed up and that's how you don't want clients to look at you or your business or your work you got to have that perceived value if you're charging people ten bucks when you should be charging them a hundred bucks they're gonna look at it as like it's not that valuable because it's only ten bucks but if you're charging them a hundred bucks they're gonna be like oh well it's way more valuable now even though the product is exactly the same so if you have the option where you could charge a higher amount or a lower dollar amount always go with the higher dollar amount because it's just that perceived value right they're gonna feel like it's more valuable in this way they're gonna start to pay more attention to it which is gonna bring me to my next point so point number two the more people pay the more that they pay attention this is so true I mean let me tell you exactly what I mean so I did a video earlier where I talked about doing free work now caveat I'm not against free work although I do think that you have to be careful for who you're doing free work for an example would be like if you're going free work for somebody who's trying to promise you exposure you know what I mean like that's the type that's typically code word for we don't have the money in our budget and that's why you have to charge your clients more because when they pay more they pay more attention now this is actually where you on the other hand the creator has to deliver if they're gonna be paying more they're gonna be paying way more attention but if you're good at what you do you have confidence in your skills and your ability then you want them to pay attention you want them to know what's going on you want them to see it and to value it and you know compensate you fairly here's the thing when you under charge people they often don't pay attention so remember the more people pay the more that they pay attention because if they're not paying attention and you're under charge of them you're gonna get categorized as well you could be categorized as the free guy which brings me to my third tip don't get categorized as the free guide the free guy the free girl you know listen I understand that sometimes you want to help people out and it's one thing if it's your friends you know it's somebody that you know you're doing them a favor but for the most part if you're gonna start trying to you know incorporate business relationships don't do anything for free okay because what can happen is is that you can get put into this category as the person who does free stuff like them yeah they do free stuff you know what I mean like oh him oh her oh yeah I know them that's the free guy don't get categorize that's the free guy here's the thing you have to hold on to that potential value okay you don't want to be put into that category where you just do stuff for free and people think that they can just ask you for favors all the time you're gonna be wasting too much time where you're serving these people where you're doing stuff for free and like at the end of the day it's not even worth it now obviously there's always an exception to the rule one of which is if the work that you're doing for free can be turned into a digital asset and sold later on down the road now talk about that in another video that I did where I talk about making passive income as a photographer using stock photography so I'll leave the link in the description for that below and you can go check that out and see what I'm talking about so yeah guys when it comes to charging you want to start to raise your prices as quickly as possible and listen don't be afraid to you know put it out there don't be afraid to charge somebody a little something you know more than you would normally be comfortable with because you know what they can always counter offer if you say this and they're like oh my god that's too high then it's like oh well you know what do you have what can you work with and always always make sure that you're working with qualified people people who can actually afford to pay you if you're working with people who were just you know they don't have any money they want to do things for you on a favor you know be very selective about those type of relationships just don't do those all willy-nilly because everybody is trying to be a star I hear these days and honestly most people think that they're stars so they feel like if you do something for them and you know they put a couple of your pictures on Instagram or they put your videos on Instagram or whatever Facebook I don't know they think that like oh yeah you're gonna like blow up you're gonna get so much fame listen bro forget the fame I don't care how much people know me I want them dolla dolla bills y'all so that's it for today guys hopefully you enjoyed this video please leave me a like drop me a comment let me know what you guys got going on once again my name is Jonathan Moore I'm signing out for all my freelancers all my creatives and everybody out there just trying to get it how they live peace
