hey what's up I'm John this is Matt that's Matt everyone guys and today we're just gonna riff about sports photography and youth sports so and being a youth sports photographer which matt has done I have money of times and we're going to talk about some ideas that matt has to save you some time and some energy and just optimize each shoot but Matt's gonna tell us a little bit about his experience as a youth sports photographer doing your sports is is pretty tough I mean it's stress but there you know I always go back to the people keeping they you hear the wedding photographers the portrait photographers complaining like you know cells are declining it's harder and harder you know all the work they have to put into it yeah come over to the volume world they think that it's not sexy and you know it's not cool it's not creative yeah but there's somebody in it pays the bills it's rewarding it is very rewarding and it's one and done for the most part you know like you're taking like 13 months you know it's not like 10 months later your first delivering their album and then they don't get back together a year and then their divorce by the tried zilla's mother the bride all those sports is not as stressful and stay away if you do it's a photograph a league with thousand kids in it yeah that's a few cells 60% that's 600 packages you could put your wedding business promotion you've seen that envelope so it could be you could be an advertising piece for your business you bar mitzvahs bar mitzvahs or quinceaneras or mm-hmm sweet sixteens all that family and I mean we're family stuff will lead to that family portrait I think a lot of people miss that such a civil that's a hot tip for you that's a good hot set but there's a way to sort of synergize with your other business yeah broaden it's a big body you get to be in front of men to to market your your services to so you're not just the youth sports photographer maybe you're the photographer in that town that they know in that community and that's what better way to connect to the community than to shoot you know what I think is happening right here we're pivoting the marketing selling yourself I think we did all right good this is what we do and we just make stuff up as we go with youth sports I mean that to me is this one of the best things when you can you know average they have hey I also did this type of photography or maybe you have a photo booth or something like that and you can just parlay those things into future jobs and then these kids maybe you know when they're getting older or two you could do their senior pictures I mean there's so many things that you that you can pivot that to but yeah whatever can you think of anything else that what I would I would walk it back a little bit to you how do you marketing to get more you sports business I don't necessarily know that there's a silver bullet there there's no easy way out I guess is what I'm getting at the chew has no easy very new shortcut having an you got to you know use all the tools now Facebook Instagram yeah you better get in front of board and you just got it and then we're gonna go right into the network I don't know there's there's no like if you do this you're gonna get twenty schools this you know twenty schools or twenty leagues this year independent news horses there's I feel like there's no rulebook because it's so different in each region so like for example in our region you know if you are connected to that legally if you're let's say a dad and you're coaching a league or you know someone that is that's a huge in right there to to get that pick up that week so really it is knowing the parents knowing the league commissioners just being connected to the community I think is a huge step in the right there it's my a good place to start if you have kids once you once you're in front of thee if you can get in front of the board you can get in front of them you know how do you differentiate yourself right I mean you need to have a good lab backing you yeah maybe us shameless plug but you know that service that attention to detail the professionalism also how do you help them promote themselves this is something where I think companies fall down one or a photographers fall down on they just like all will pay commission back to you like will help me a fundraiser for you I think you can you can take it a step farther there was I heard this a long time ago and had had success in this world why not help them fundraise help fundraise like um help them build so instead of you saying well I'm gonna give using class I'm gonna cut you a check why don't L let's let's keep a hundred percent of that check right let's help them do some maybe some raffle promotions that help sponsor them you know where those you know you get them did you create a raffle program where they're you're in a town with you know sort of a college team get tickets if it's opium we're talking leagues you know a baseball tickets but like a limo ride I've heard people do that okay but they put together a package but then now they agree now they're helping you you're helping them more value value foods that's not exciting to look forward to right and then you get to keep so if you buy a package so you are you are entered into the raffle to maybe go to a local baseball game or maybe to get a free session from this photographer maybe it gives out five private family sessions or something to five lucky winners that's a great idea but you get more recently as a give a lot to get obviously so you know when it comes to marketing like when we first started nations photo that we're giving out you know you want people to try your services so more people talk about it so here's $25 gift card to try us out so that photographers here's five sessions that you guys know I do seniors and maybe they didn't and then all of a sudden you start picking up business it's so worth it just to give that free session or give you in the first place I was listening to a podcast about late history of Pepsi and Pepsi I think was one of the first ones to give out free samples and that so because no one would try Pez you know in Texas right yeah Texas was a coke Cola 10-minute Dr Pepper and dodging Oh Dr Pepper town right man so they wouldn't trouble in Hep C so they had to give it out for free and then once they did that sales went up taking it back to the photographer you've got to add some value there and and sometimes free million to give people exactly sort of PR that if you treat that kindergarten parent and do great things from them now you've got at least brand loyalty yak there or you know hopefully made an exact but you feel great okay that wasn't ideal it is gonna go out and possibly about your missus but now you've got loyalty so first grade second or third day fourth grade fifth grade sixth grade seventh grade mmm-hmm they're they're buying packages from you versus you piss them off you know cuz you're you're just thinking in monetary terms like short-term thinking not my fault duck and your kid messed up your package I'll reprint it for you and charge you again like no no you reprint that package for free they are thankful treat them awesome in that first interaction you've bought yourself so much good little totally and you don't know what it's gonna lead to also from there that's really the long tail you know this industry it has to be a long tail you've got a you need to twist and pivot and other things when we talk about advertising in your sports packages going by taking time create a compelling insert yeah hey you know most laps clear nuts well we'll put an insert in for you that's another way to do that and then that could also introduce them to more of your worth I think in the in the volume space you have to be offering pre-sales and post-sales okay but there's a huge huge opportunity to be generating revenue at multiple multiple touchpoints yeah that prepay it you get the cash up front right now you want to encourage that you're gonna you in a discount that and promote it and you say if you get your order in by the day of the leave yeah so they show up okay well say 75% of people buy their so now you've got 25 people who didn't purchase well now you can send home a chance a second chance or when you deliver those 75% you know the orders the packages go back to the school or the league the other 25% you know go ahead and prove that 25% give them I think there's there's a lot of fear that the the the Golden Goose in the industry has always been in this prepay like I got to get my money up front I think the industry is missing the boat and not moving fast enough into how do we do a better job with the long tail in the proofing right consumer behavior has changed so fast that they want it they wanted up front they want to transparent they're kind of the whole prepay thing kind of like why would I buy something that that I haven't seen right edition of school photography of prepaid leave talks easy it's I don't know was like tarnish but it's not as shiny as it used to be I think I think the stuff is his secondary now for the longest time it was check out all these doodads and widgets and there's still a place for all the doodads and widgets but there's still the emotional the why the reason we're in this business that you know cataloging those memories and Crain at that beautiful timeline of the child of the student athlete of where they are well taking it back then again to the youth sports yep you're in front of the committee yeah that's nice put a bow on that real quick here real simple I think we missed and this to me is an obvious one you're trying to get that league and you're trying to get sales to add some more value to the entire league like every kid in that league should have like at least a 5×7 13 were you telling that also yeah wholesale so but you could even have that included like say look when maybe there's a league that is having trouble signing kids up or sometimes that are inherent in the community or thinking the economy's in a certain situation maybe they're thinking is too expensive so you add more value to the league fee by saying and then you can work with them and say look your fee is X amount you know I'll put it a 5×7 and you can market that that they get a 5×7 of the team when they sign up and then go from there right and then there's a wholesale price back to wait one area I've had good things and bad things in my experience in that view sometimes you you end up only generating that bad amount of dollars that you don't that people don't see the value okay some you know some wholesale it's hard to say yes i wholesale was great you know because it's kind of situated to the so you got to medium take it out when you save that one this is maybe if you're like a newer and two youth sports and you really want to get the lead and you're trying to just not right I mean to the other approaches just a lot of people do that for the coaches don't give them a clipboard or the team and they'll give them a team picture for the coaches whatever you can do to to make them feel like they're getting good value but if you know your market you say look I know these kids in this market maybe I know every family can afford my packages so here's a 5×7 group and just you know just if they use the services they know they're in enough sales if you're set properly in writing you're you're making them it's worth your while still yeah cuz now the same time if it's worth your while again then you're then you create that promotion cycle yeah right that you can you can you can get in front of other people you don't know one of the things we always talked about once you don't know who that that kids that sound in front of you who's that kid's parent right is that the superintendent of the school districts right you know or the principal's kid or the Commissioner the league yeah coaches and then if you make a good impression like who's looking over your shoulder today's market you to be successful you have to be recruiting the school and the lead to do to help you market because of hell yeah disparate communication is there's so many different app you know apps out there you go Facebook Instagram snapchat whatsapp you name it I mean yeah email just sending an email you got any good notes and emails you can get that's that but I'm talking about so many leagues now communicate through Facebook that's them before I got correct your I Gregg you recruit them and if they're being your voice yeah it adds so much credibility to you bet the league is saying hey you know Mack Scogin photography is gonna be out you know this week you know here's here's a link to the order for me easygoing life you know write a script for them so it's just easy drag-and-drop and and then now you're not just the sales person you're like oh yeah yeah we're all just gonna ignore that you know now that I owe the if the league is promoting them okay there yeah that's a good guy also serves as a as a reminder for the parents is that adult we didn't know about picture day so you're kind of helping them make that framework make that organize make yard signs full local printer and make you guards like when you show up at the school yeah put yard signs all where the kids drop off put put signs that say hey pictures day today I agree that I mean with a link to your online prepaid card ya know since really don't sit in the parking lot and prepay right there on their fine that's great advice hopefully hopefully what we talked about in today's video I think that there's a few things that you guys can utilize and there's other
