what's up guys my name is Brandon and he just got a brand new iPhone 10s or an iPhone 10s max you already went through the initial setup process like I showed in my last video but now you may be stuck and wondering what can I do to make my device as good as possible so in this video I'm gonna be showing you the first 11 things I would do immediately after getting the iPhone 10s and if you guys watched my unboxing video you know that I got the gold iPhone 10s max right here and I will say that this phone is very similar to the iPhone 10 so as expected this video will also have some similarities to last year's video but of course there are also some unique things here with the 10s that I will be touching on in this video all right so let's not waste any time let's get started so the first thing you guys want to do is get familiar with the gesture controls and just navigating around the whole OS without a home button so just like the iPhone 10 the iPhone 10s does not have a home button so if you came from an iPhone with a home button this is going to be a whole new ballgame for you so you're just gonna need to learn about basic gestures so basically swiping up from the bottom is the equivalent to the home screen this is going to get you back to the home screen when you go into an application you want to get out you just swipe up from the bottom if you want to bring down the control center it's up in the top right make sure it's from the top right if you do from the top middle that will be your Notification Center and if you want to get into the app switcher to see which applications you have running swipe up and hold and it will bring up the apps which are right there and if you want to close out of applications which I usually suggest against just swipe up and if you want to invoke Siri to simply press and hold on the side button on the right side and it will pull up Siri and if you want to turn the phone off press the home button up home button down and then hold the power button and I do also have a full video going over all of the gestures in the iPhone S basically like a beginner's guide and that video will be linked down in the description below so the next thing you guys want to do is go ahead and set up face ID if you did not already do so in the initial setup phase face idea is just so incredible for so many different reasons password autofill is one of my favorite features to use face ID for but basically you want to go into face ID set up your face and also set up an alternate appearance if you maybe wear a lot of makeup if you maybe want you know your wife to be able to get into your film whatever it is make sure you also set up but alternate appearance if you're going to be needing that and then just go through these settings and make sure you need all of these toggled on or off basically just configure all the face ID and passcode settings to your liking and once again the ability to use face ID for app store purchases for Apple pay for a password autofill is just so so useful much quicker than having to type in your password every time you want to buy something in the iTunes Store of course it is tremendous for unlocking as well and I prefer that over passcode and over touch ID as well so yeah go through here and configure all of your face ID settings next you're gonna want to configure your control center and also your widgets panel so let's start with the control center here so you want to go into settings go to control center go to customize controls and from here you can add different controls from the bottom so if I wanted to add scan QR code it will pop up in there and then it will automatically populate inside of my control center without a respring or a reboot or anything like that and then you can also move these around so if you use one more than others you may want it near at the top or maybe close to the right side where your thumb will easily press so yeah just move these around and configure it to your liking and then if we go to our home screen and swipe over to the right you will see that this is where our widgets are and you can also get to this page from the notification center if you swipe down to gets a notification center and then swipe to the right and if we go all the way down and click on edit this is where we can configure all of our widgets and you can of course move these around just like you could with the control center you do also have widgets down here as well third-party widgets as well as built-in widgets so you can see you have a lot to choose from but be very careful with what you add to the window so you don't want a ton of widgets in there because that will eat away at your battery life but definitely configure widgets because they are very useful I'll check my widgets at least five to ten times a day speaking of saving battery the fourth thing you're gonna want to do is watch my battery saving video for iOS 12 you just bought this device so you're gonna want to make sure you get your battery off to a good start and you're not wearing it down from day one and that battery saving tips video is up in the cards right now and also down in the description below I highly suggest watching that video because there's over 20 tips in it but I will show you a few basic ones right now so you did see the battery panel right there that is a good way to see what is eating away at your battery life you can see that you have the charge level we get to the last 24 hours last 10 days you can see the health of your battery of course here should be a hundred percent right now and if you go into our settings display and brightness I would suggest turning auto lock to five minutes or never just so your phone doesn't lock when you're maybe reading something race to wake is another feature I'd like to disable to save battery life and if we go to our Settings General accessibility display accommodations auto brightness is another toggle you should consider turning on or off depending on your preference this isn't gonna make a huge difference if you manually adjust your brightness a lot like I do but if you don't auto brightness baby worthwhile and if you configured your Center you should have had low-power mode as they talked on there because you will use low-power mode a lot if you want to save battery so you can see you have that toggle to press to simply enable and disable low-power mode and like I said there are over 20 more tips in that battery saving video for iOS 12 so definitely check that out the fifth thing you guys should do is learn and create series shortcuts so this is a new application from app elastic just going into the App Store searching shortcuts and downloading it it is from Apple once again so this is what these shortcuts application looks like it I did make a full tutorial on actually what it is and how to create your first shortcut and I highly suggest watching that video it is also up in the cards and down in the description below but basically what this does is that it allows you to automate certain tasks so you can see I have a lot of different ones right here for instance if I was out to eat at a nice restaurant and I wanted to quickly calculate a tip I could just click on the shortcut right here put in the bill say the bill was eighty five twenty nine and since I created this I had to pop up to show that I wants a tip either 12 percent 15 percent 18 percent or 20 percent so let's say that the service was just alright it wasn't the greatest so we're just going to do 12 percent once you click that it will instantly show you what your tip should be and what your total bill will be so this is super super useful and you can also get to this from the widgets panel if you go all the way down to edit there is a widget for shortcuts and you can simply click on it from within shortcuts right there but my favorite way of doing it is just going into the actual application and clicking on it and there are other simple ones that you can do as well so maybe you're going on a flight and you want to turn on airplane mode and all that good stuff you can either tell Siri taking off or you could just click on the action right here you can click on the bubble right here and it will automatically put you in airplane mode low-power mode and if you click these three dots right here it will actually show you what it does and again you actually set this up so you can tell it what to do so when I tell Siri taking off it's going to set airplane mode on its gonna turn low-power mode on and it's also going to stern do not disturb on and then I have another one for landing so once that flight is coming to an in and you're landing to turn all those tacos off you just simply tell Siri landing or you can click on the shortcut right here and it turns everything back on and like I said I did make a full video explaining a shortcut so if you want to see that it's up in the cards and down in the description below but definitely get familiar with it because it's very very powerful and very useful I use these pretty much every single day now to automate certain tasks the next thing you guys should do is test out the camera test out portrait mode because the iPhone 10 s has a brand new exclusive feature which allows you to adjust the depth of field without compromising the quality of the photo so let's just do that real quick let's go ahead to camera let's go to portrait let's flip the camera around to me let's take a picture real quick and so there we go there is our portrait photo and if we click on edit you can see we can now adjust how much blur is in the background how much bokeh is in the background which is awesome so if we go all the way to F 1.4 you can see it almost looks fake because there's so much blur in the background it doesn't look realistic so 2.5 looks good I'll just click on done and again this is a feature exclusive to the iPhone 10s this is not even on the iPhone 10 so that's definitely feature I will be trying out also if you go into settings and go to camera you can adjust your settings in here so if you want to record video at 4k make sure to change this to record video at 4k I do the 30 or 60 fps you also have these other settings in here if you want to record slo-mo you can go to format's you can also choose high efficiency as the format if you do take a lot of photos and videos and you have the HDR settings here as well which I would definitely recommend having smart HDR on that is also another new feature here with the iPhone 10 s the next thing you guys should do is create your own Mii emoji so if we go into our messages and swipe over here and click on an emoji and once you get to this screen click on the plus and this is where you create your own Mii emoji this is very similar to your bitmoji and snapchat but it is an emoji and you can see it's actually picking up my mouth it can pick up my tongue which is pretty funny and awesome and you can actually use this new emoji in FaceTime cause you can send it to people as videos you can send it an iMessage there's a lot of pretty cool uses for it it's kind of a gimmick but it is actually pretty fun so you can see you can set your skin tone right here I'm just gonna do that skin tone but change my hairstyle since I can't stand how it looks right now they don't really have a guy with sticking up hair that's as short as mine so I'm just gonna go with this one because I like it then you can add in freckles you have hair style you have the head shape you have your eyes the color of your eyes you can change your eyebrows your nose and lips your ears your facial hair your eye where your head where you can change so many things and it's just really really cool again it's pretty fun to get on FaceTime using your emoji so once you've configured it just go and click on done and there you have your Mii emoji of course you can also mess around with the an emoji as well it's pretty funny at first but I just prefer than emoji see I definitely play around with it it's pretty fun to play around with and send back and forth to friends the next thing you guys should do is install applications and customize your home screen so obviously I already have a bunch of applications on my phone because I did transfer it from another iPhone but if you don't go ahead into the App Store and start downloading applications and then there are multiple ways to customize your home screen so with iOS 12 you're now allowed to move multiple applications at a time so if we go ahead all the way over and if we select one if we start pulling it away and then start tapping on other icons you can see we can move multiple different icons different applications to different pages at one time and also if you wanted to create folders you just simply take an application and put it on top of another one and it will create a folder if you go into that folder you can rename it up here and then of course the delete an application you can just click on the X right there and to get out of wiggle mode you can either swipe up from the bottom or press done up in the top right the next thing you guys should do is something very similar to what I already mentioned before but that is to pay attention to the screen time and the battery panels inside of settings so if we go all the way up into screen time it's gonna show you where you're spending the most time on your phone so if you go and click on the phone name right here you can see we get a graph we can also get a chart down here with the most used applications you can break it down by category you can show just today can show the last seven days and what's really cool is if you have multiple phones under one Apple ID say maybe everybody in your family has one you can see everybody's screen time if you have sharing on you can see that now once I enable that that means I will be able to see the usage on this phone on another phone that I have that's using the same Apple ID and that's also on iOS 12 and here you can also set app limits which is really great if you have kids you can set limits for you know which applications that can be in for a certain amount of time you also have downtime which you can schedule time away from the screen if you want to and then you also have restrictions and applications that you want white listed as well again great if you have kids and then going back down to the battery panel this again is going to show you where your battery level is and when it starts dropping off you can see the activity and you can actually get very detailed and click on certain parts of the graph to see what was using the most of your battery at that certain time so this is very useful insight to know what is actually eating away at your battery life and once again it is very important to start off your iPhone's life paying attention to battery life and not draining that battery the next thing you guys should do is consider purchasing a lightning to USB C cable and also a USB C adapt for fast charging unfortunately the iPhone 10's or the 10s max did not come with fast charging in the box but you can't purchase the lightning to USB C cable and of course the adapter as well from the Apple store now they're not cheap but it is worth it if you do one fast charging because of course the iPhones do take a little while to charge but of course if you do have a wireless fast charger that would work as well it's really just personal preference with what you want and the final thing you guys should do right once you get your iPhone 10 s or 10 s max is install a screen protector and throw on a case so you can see I have screen protectors right here I also have multiple cases for my iPhone 10 s max in my iPhone 10 s the back of these phones are glass so you definitely want to protect that glass and it's not cheap at all if you do drop it in a break so definitely throw on a case and also a screen protector to protect your iPhone I will have links down below to the screen protector in case as well along with some of my favorite companies that I always use for cases but anyways guys there you have it those are the first 11 things you should do right once you get your iPhone 10 s or 10 s max if you enjoyed the video I would appreciate it if you gave it a thumbs up also make sure to subscribe for a lot more iOS content but anyways guys thanks again for watching and I'll see you soon
