FASHION & PORTRAITS –
what's up gay it's throughout lotion photography and I'm back with another video for you guys in this video I'm gonna give you guys five tips ooh my head was like super white dank here there we go five tips on taking better portrait photographs so I know we as photographers you know we talk a lot about gear a lot of what equipment camera lenses and slashing all sorts of stuffs we sometimes we get too wrapped up in that I'm not gonna talk about any of that in this phone in this video you know I talk about a lot in my videos this video I'm gonna focus more on the non equipment side so the first tip I'm gonna give you is finding the right model when I first started I thought okay let me get like a pretty girl or a good-looking guy and that didn't always translate well into great photographs because you could be good looking but you don't really photograph well so it's not just a matter of good-looking people you want to find experienced models that photograph well photogenic they know their angles they know how to pose you can look Instagram you can look model mayhem you can look even Facebook check their portfolio though look through their portfolio do they have the look that you're going for do they have what you want have they worked with other professional photographers before so these are things that you want to look for the better the model the better your photo is gonna be and sometimes the not so good looking according to society standards those models sometimes photograph amazing sometimes even better than the pretty models so don't just look at looks you guys are wondering what that squeaky noises that's my bird Marley she's in her cage she wants to get out I just have to keep her in the cage for this video sorry about that guys number two find a great makeup artist now some bottles may say they could do their own makeup and chances are you know what they probably can but makeup for a photoshoot and makeup when you're just going on hanging with your friends two totally different things but try to find a professional makeup artist and that's just gonna make your photos a whole lot better now thing with makeup if another thing you want to keep in mind if you're using flash most makeup artists know this but you might want to remind your makeup artist you might want to apply twenty to thirty percent more makeup or heavier or darker because the flash is gonna wash out the makeup so if you just do it you know normally then it's just gonna wash off the makeup so we'll apply it a little bit darker it may seem too much in real life but in the photograph it's gonna look amazing so that's one tip you want to keep in mind tip number three hair stylist now sometimes the makeup artist might also be a hair stylist so if a makeup artist tells you oh I do hair as well a lot of makeup artists do hair as well so if you can find a makeup artist that also does hair bonus if not get a separate hairstylist that specializes in hair it's gonna make your photos a lot better okay so what you're gonna have a professional model you're gonna have professional makeup and professional hair that right there you're already getting bomb photos okay before you even done anything tip number four wardrobe good wardrobes cuz you don't want to have amazing makeup amazing model amazing hair and then like crappy wardrobe so some tips of getting you know wardrobe you may want to work with a wardrobe designer someone that designs their own clothes maybe you know fine you can find like a local designer in town if they're willing to collaborate with you you can also find a local boutique that sells clothes or makes their own clothes you might want to collaborate with them you could trade the photos for you know using their clothes you can hire a stylist that's gonna handle the clothing that's gonna style you they usually have a good sense of fashion that you should have a good eye so you know that's another option another popular option is buy in return so but you can go to like H&M Zara gasp Nordstrom wherever you can go find some amazing wardrobes and clothes that you really like you know keep the tags on make sure you know the return policy don't get them dirty wear them for the shoot and then return them I've done that many times so that's another option and sometimes the model themselves have a wide variety of wardrobe you can go through and look at their wardrobe and you know you can rock something that they already own basically with wardrobe you're in charge so you make sure that the wardrobe is exactly what you want that it fits your style there's nothing worse than just having wardrobe you know make sure you've got like a lint roller get any lint off make sure it's ironed you don't want like wrinkles and stuff like that so those are some things to keep in mind and tip number five fifth FIF tip number five this one is so underrated but and assisted get an assistant oh my goodness get an assistant assistant this has made my photos literally ten times better especially when I'm doing on location outdoors using lighting my assistant is holding my light and the reason this makes my photos better is number one I like to use big modifiers sometimes and if I just place the modifier on the ground like an umbrella or a softbox I'm running the risk of the wind knocking it over and a lot of times when I don't have an assistant you know I might be shooting in the back of my mind I'm thinking about that flash you know I'm thinking okay I don't want that to fall over I'm thinking about my gear I may have my bag right here okay my minus zero can make sure no one's stealing my gear make sure that doesn't fall over and I have to look at my subject and concentrate on the shoot when you have an assistant he's holding he or she is holding the light I don't need to worry about it being knocked over by the wind so when I'm not worrying about that now that's given me more focus on the shoot and when I got more focus on the shoot my photos are gonna come on a lot better another thing they can angle the light exactly where you want we call this a voice-activated light stand because if you just have it position stand with no lighting assistant then you can only angle it you're very limited on how you can angle it when I have a lighting assistant I can angle it exactly where I want and if I I can say you know what tilted a little bit more there bring it more in front of them bring it down a little bit bring it back it's it's amazing and another thing if you're using a flash system where you cannot control the the power from the cam and you have to control it from the actual strobe that's where a lighting assistant comes in handy because you could just say hey bump it up to half power okay no no you know what bring it out to quarter power bring it to an eighth power you can have your assistant do that instead of running back and forth I remember early in my career that's what I had to do I had to run back and forth and it just took up so much time when you have an assistant they can also watch your your gear keep an eye on gear for you so that's you the photographer you can focus on your subject you could focus on the shot you don't have to worry about all those minuscule things so those are my five tips number one great model number two great makeup artist number three great hairstylist number four wardrobes and number five and assistant so these are some good tips in order to make your photos a lot better your portrait photos a lot better the key is having a great team that's the key having a great team you can't do it all by yourself so don't even try to do it all by yourself have a great team so those are my five tips let me know what
