Garry Winogrand has some very crooked horizon lines in his street photography, but does that mean he should straighten them? We’ll find out why not in the video! I think he’s got a great eye and captures some very spontaneous moments. Garry Winogrand was a very prolific shooter and shot millions of photos…literally millions! Within the video you’ll see clips of awesome documentaries showing his shooting style. It’s really hilarious to me. I’ve adopted this technique in my own street photography and it works perfect every time.

hey everyone welcome back it's Tavis lief Glover and today we're going to be talking about spontaneity in street photography so one of my favorite street photographers of all time is Gary Winograd I hate the term I think it's a stupid term street photography I don't think it makes it any it tells you anything about a photographer or work when we look closer at his shots we can see his spontaneity and we can judge this by the horizon line most of his photos are really crooked and a lot of people frown upon that but in street photography it can give clues to the spontaneity of the shot in fine art photography or print work or anything like that you probably want to straighten the horizon line in street photography the ethics are a little bit different for right now we're talking about crooked horizon lines and the spontaneity it reveals so let's go into the computer take a look at Gary wedding grads photos and then I'm gonna show you a couple clips you can see how quickly he takes the image so let's get into it now so here we are in bridge I'm just gonna right through these images this is Gary Wynn and grand right here and we're gonna take a look at some of the straighter images and then we'll move on to the more crooked images that really love this one it's got nice movement in the hair it's a nice gesture poking that way in the direction of the car so it's a little crooked but not as much as his other ones so these first couple images are the straightest ones we can find and is so this one I really love the woman's facial expression and these two girls they're in skirts and then you look at the crowd and everybody's looking at them walk by especially these old guys so I thought that was pretty funny this one is good see the horizon line is just a little bit crooked but we'll see how the other ones are majorly crooked so this one he actually had a little bit more time to compose you can see he's capturing the gestures of the kids the women and he had probably popped off a couple shots and caught this one you know the photographer's responsible for two things once you you put your body where you want it to be what's in the frame and when you snap the shutter that's what you that's what the photographer does the camera does the rest you know you get with a camera saw and one of his techniques is to act like a new photographer and just fiddle with his camera a lot and he looks at it real strange and then he takes a couple more shots winds up and then pops off a couple more shots [Applause] when a brand maintains that the problem in photography doesn't consist of taking a pretty picture it's to find a way to transform the real world into something completely different into a distinct image that's part of this technique and the crooked horizon line it's part of his artistic style because it's done it so much this one the elephant creating a nice baroque diagonal there but these first couple or the straightest this one's nice it's nice movement in there interesting bandage on the guy's nose and then now we're starting to get into the crooked ones so he does this interview with a woman and I'll show you that in a sec but she asked about the snapshot aesthetic and it's almost like he gets offended by that term like the reference and I can understand why a street photographer how do you respond to that now tiresome phrase snapshot aesthetic I was coming who's the time like they're referring the photographs where they believe that they're loosely organized whatever I call it whatever terms you like or casually made but now the fact is that varies that snapshot theory they're talking about there's another family album picture which is one of the most precisely pictures didn't even know the meaning of the term they they're using it it's an extremely precisely made photograph everybody's 15 feet away and they smile and then you and the son is over the shoulder it's that's when the picture is taken it's always one of the most carefully made has it ever happened they just dumb and I was taking your photograph before and my well-intended whimsical way I tilted the camera in an attempt to make my own winter grind from what I understand that's not the way one does it what is the meaning of the horizontal tilted frame that you often use and is it tilted it wasn't and he can't really define what is behind his own photographs he basically sums it up to that there is a straight line in every one of his shots which if you look hard enough there is a straight line like this girl's arm is straight straight up and down but the horizon line is crooked use one edge and use a vertical edge as the as the point of reference instead of although there's a photograph that's not exactly in there I have a picture of a beggar in lism there's an arm coming in to the refrain from the side and the arm is parallel to the horizontal edge at holes that makes it work let's give it some games so that's what people refer to as the snapshot aesthetic but when I look at it and once you see him shoot how fast he shoots and how fast he puts the viewfinder up to his eye you can determine that it's just his spontaneous reaction to capturing the image so that's what I summon up to at the moment of the interview he can't really define it in that way just dumb it's the spontaneity of his his shooting style so this one is crooked this one and he whips up his camera and takes a picture of the girls it almost looks like she notices him so he's probably taking maybe one or two shots she notices him in the street definitely crooked this one's crooked whips up his camera real quick takes a picture and if we refer to his comment on there's a straight line in there somewhere well with this guy's leg is straight vertical compared to the edge of the frame so that's what he's talking about this lady's leg is straight up and down so this is the way he looks at it but the way I look at it is it's his spontaneity and he does a very good job and just because in the fine art world you have to have a straight horizon line or they say it's better data straight horizon line in the street photographer your world you don't necessarily want to crop your images unless it's for publication unless it's for a book or a poster or something like that my method and my recommendation for any street photographer is don't crop this one is definitely crooked capturing a lot of light rays bouncing off this building here and it's creating a nice design nice triangular design here and it's an interesting scene too is about this guy in the wheelchair on the left looks like he's half-asleep reflections flares women on in the center and people waiting for the bus right here it looks like this one's another quick one he whips it up captures all of these gestures all these people whispering secrets and this woman looks like she's passed out or she might be crying this woman's mouth is open she's got an expressive gesture there great photo and doesn't mean you have to have a straight horizon line it's capturing life as it is and if you go in Photoshop and I tip you like this and straighten the horizon you're gonna cut up some context you're gonna cut out the spontaneity of the this one looks pretty low looks like he almost shot from the hip which he claims he doesn't shoot from the hip but sometimes he does and he mentions that most of the time it doesn't turn out very well which I agree with I've shot from the hip not too much but maybe 20 times and there's probably only been three shots that I really like that I shot from the hip so the batting average when you're shooting from the hip is pretty bad this one again crooked horizon line but you can see her leg is straight up and down but he's capturing nice movement here this one's hilarious it's these people kissing on the Left she's looking right at him well she's kissing this guy and smoking a cigarette and this girl's facial expressions like just what are you doing dude so that was pretty funny and these four ladies mimicking kind of these four bags nice juxtaposition their crooked horizon line of course juxtapositions and gestures that usually go unnoticed for most of us are very significant in these photographs and you find them worthy of recording and this one's really crooked he has a fascination with women and he takes a lot of photos of women and you can almost see like if you go through all of his photos of women they almost always seem crooked like he doesn't have the courage to ask them for a photo or stop and talk to them he's just like so nervous he whips up his camera quick almost to never get caught and takes his photo and runs so it's pretty funny it's funny i compulsively this one too he probably had a fascination with this woman thought she was pretty and took the shot real quick and you can see she notices him his shadows right here you may be popped off one or two shots and then pretending to play with this camera or whatever shot another shot but um this one's really crooked this one also her kid this guy's legs are straight compared to the edge of the frame but like I said he's got a fascination with women and he pops off the photos so quickly he has no time to worry about straightening the horizon line as I analyze Gary winning grands photos and looked at the more I started liking them more and I liked that snapshot aesthetic which he hates that turn just dumb but I liked the spontaneity he caught in all of his photos for most of his photos and then you start looking at your own photos and you see that you caught something as well and without analyzing these masters like this is one of my photos and this is what I call a fleeting moment I saw this guy do a back flip once and I waited around with my camera and he's gesturing like he's gonna do it again and he's standing away from the shore looking backwards over his shoulder and waiting for the tide to come up so I waited around and I knew he was gonna do it again so I had time to compose I had time to line up the horizon line and I knew what to expect I waited and snapped and popped it off in one shot and got him straight up and down in the middle of the air and there's other times where there's fleeting moments and I whip up my camera and I don't have time to capture you know a straight horizon line and if I straighten this it would take away the spontaneity of the image so this one also politely 50 yards away and she did a cartwheel once and I start walking towards them and her mom's over here on the right and I start getting my camera ready set the focal distance and it looked like she wasn't gonna do it so I let my camera down and then start walking again and she actually did another cartwheel so I whip up my camera and snap the shot but I didn't have time to properly compose it with a straight Verizon line but all of this is context the horizon line and everything it tells more of a story for the what you see it tells the story of the photographer and what he was doing at that moment and this was a fleeting moment that I wanted to catch this one also they I saw this kid running towards the water got my camera ready and popped off a shot tried to look for the expect of view which would help define him a little bit better and timed it so he would be landing in the water but that's all the time I had to compose the image so that's a Kirkwood horizon line but it tells the story of how spontaneous the shot was so look through
