fifteen years ago I started a retail business and e-commerce website selling and teaching people how to play world musical instruments from day one our goal was to sell products online so out came the point-and-shoot camera started taking pictures of their products and to be honest they look pretty bad but that was the beginning of a product photography journey that continued for ten years and that business my name is Matt Reed I'm a commercial photographer and owner of Perth product photography the retail and e-commerce business was a wonderful testing ground just to see what really worked and what didn't work in the way of images and video what resulted in more customers in more sales how to capture and use the right images and ultimately to build a stronger business for 10 years I invested bucketloads of time and effort into upscaling in terms of knowledge and practice and the equipment needed and really tuned up our product photography and demonstration videos I guess there was two major motivators one I'm a gadget man I love buttons and dials and things that take batteries and I really enjoyed kind of the technical aspects of product photography but secondly was actually seeing because it was my business to see how that translated onto the sale sheet so see when we developed or improved our product photography or videos and actually see an increase in sales and that was real motivating and essential when you're running a business now I'm fortunate enough to be able to work with many clients across a wide range of industries I love it we may be photographing high-end jewelry in the studio one day on with the steel caps and high-vis and out on an industrial site the next back in the studio photographing wine bottles or food and then out filming a product demonstration video each project may be worlds apart but the goal is always the same it's to capture images that sell the variety we love it it just keeps us fresh keeps us motivated and I think most importantly just keeps us learning and growing product photography is surprisingly challenging to do really well assuming you have all the gear knowledge and technical experience dialed in it really comes down to a game of millimeters the tiniest movement of a light modifier or the change in diffusion material but the camera angle or product position it can make all the difference between an average photo that blends in with the masses and a strong marketing image that will sell we obsessively fuss over the most minut details but you have to and it's what really sets you apart and really for nothing else it's the sleep at night factor it's the sense of pride in your work product photography is all about problem solving there isn't a magic generic set up that works for all products where you just plonk the products in and they look the best they can I see this done a lot out there and it's a shame each setup needs to be sweetly finessed for that particular product so the light follows the curves or emphasizes the shape and depth or really showcases the texture in the material of that product again it's a game of millimeters and and it's all in the detail and then there's consistency it doesn't matter if we're photographing 50 products in a day or matching a single shot that we took a year ago we obsess about consistency and it's really important that all the imagery hangs together I think the biggest asset for our clients is the fact that we truly care about their businesses it's kind of hardwired into us some clients come to us knowing exactly what they want it's purely just our job to execute their ideas and bring their ideas to life other clients come to us knowing that they need photos or a video and really have no idea where to start and that gets us excited but we love that we love working with clients and just I guess exploring and just working out what's going to give them the most benefit for their business and the best way to go about that for them as much as I love photography myself and the team at Perth product photography love business even more just seeing brands strengthened and businesses grow through having the right photos and videos we get a real kick out of that and our clients love us for it – it's pretty cool
