Finally realising my dream of driving up the West Coast of America… sort of. Unfortunately, due to a few setbacks with the weather in California, causing landslides along Big Sur, flooding in Santa Barbara and most of California Highway 1 to be closed; our US West Coast road trip didn’t quite get off on the right foot. But that didn’t stop us making the most of it all and still capturing some images of beautiful scenes and dramatic landscapes!
Follow our travel vlog as we capture photography from Los Angeles all the way up to Monterey via Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur. Starting with an easy pace in DTLA and the Arts District, before heading to West Hollywood Boulevard and Mulholland Drive for a stormy looking sunset. Followed by a day of driving up California interstate 5 through rolling hills and onto the dramatic Big Sur coastline.
Stay up to date with the rest of our road trip as we travel from Los Angeles all the way up through California, Oregon and Washington, stopping at San Francisco, Trinidad, Redwoods, Rocky Point, Portland and Seattle.

I'm gonna print this video by saying it's gonna be very very late so we're currently the beginning of March today as March the 7th by the time you're watching this I think is gonna be very very late anyway where am I I'm in LA so I'm currently on the rooftop of my apartment that I've rented so it's like an air B&B but technically I do it through booking comm kind of weird anyway yes I've come up before the sunrise and we're starting we are actually starting the u.s. west coast road trip heading all the way north to Seattle I've had a dream of doing this for a number of years and we're finally doing it we're gonna go explore LA for a little bit and we've got one day here before we head on to Big Sur on our way to the Bay Area in San Francisco and other places around there by the way I should point out so these time lapses I've been making I've been using my nan tripod a set up which I made a video about you can go and check that out up here so it's kind of like a clamp and all sorts that sort of holds a camera and I've been making them on the Lumix gh4 5's now this has been loaned to me from Panasonic as you know if they are a current sponsor of the channel and some of the other videos that we've been making we've been doing a lot with this as well as my GH five and those getting some photos with my ex 100f because we've got a nice sort of framing for 23 milk and down there as well and a couple of my ex h1 but mainly I was using my ex 100 F this morning because it was nice and wide yeah we're now gonna head out into the arts district which is kind of walking distance from where this apartment is sort of why we chose it here because when I came to LA for Adobe MAX last year went around the arts district and I really liked it I thought there's a lot to explore there however we were exploring with like 150 other people which meant that no one got shots the weather is looking better yesterday it was raining like non-stop so we can go and get some shots out there by the way this is the apartment I'll leave a link in the description it was very convenient in terms of the location the pricing was all right as well and I just kind of want to share those details and bits of information with you because I think it's useful if you want to plan your own trip such as this type of West Coast series so yeah let's head to the Arts District early give us a quick rundown of all the different makes of cars that we've had in the past [Laughter] we're actually just leaving the car and we're gonna go walk out but we need the car later it's another good thing about where we are is that there's free parking because I've heard parking in LA is pretty bad in fact when I was here in October it was really difficult trying to find off street parking by yourself luckily I'm with Ellie this time because you can read the signs but when you're drivin by yourself you're trying to drive and read the signs it's a mess so hard I've also heard San Diego's even worse I'm loving all of these like buildings and converted warehouses and there's a lot of creative use of space here which is kind of its my vibe it's what I like you know rather than letting things go to waste it's regenerating it and making it interesting do you want to go No we're driving and then out and we're gonna be in and out we actually do need to be in the know yeah so I've had an in and out once before I enjoyed it it was good I wouldn't say the hype was like massive but Ellie's never had an in-and-out and their most popular around LA so we're doing it in and out everyone told us about the animal fries uh yeah animal fries I think of bacon and cheese right I have no loaded yeah I don't know if I could stomach that at the moment what did you do okay so we're just over on West Hollywood Boulevard and that sort of area you thinking oh no the Sun is gonna be setting soon where can we go areas that we had in mind for like 40 minute drives away so like throw some area just at random driving through all these nice houses and we've come to this look out look out looks good so we're gonna be driving up to Northern California today unfortunately the weather has been pretty bad the last few days in some areas and there's been a lot of landslides which means that a big chunk of highway 1 is closed which is a shame because that whole area in that area of Big Sur was probably the most picturesque area I knew of in California that I kind of based this trip around and we're not able to drive it there's also an area in Santa Barbara that's been closed due to flooding so we can't even do like a lower section of it so there's gonna have to take the five all the way north and get to a place called Bixby bridge and then maybe come down south and then come back on myself just so that we can see a little element of Big Sur so yeah it's a huge shame but is what it is yeah so you have to just kind of check the roads on a day to day basis because it is pretty much just hugging the cliff edge so it's quite a treacherous route in inclement weather on a happier note though I had a voucher from the coffee place that we went to which is called go get em tiger and because I asked for an email receipt they sent me a voucher this morning and got me a free coffee so that is good start to the day right let's go it's gonna be a boring I think boring five and a bit our drive is a tiny bit agreeing is there the scenery is a lot better than I was expecting honestly I was thinking it was going to be like one of those freeways that could be anywhere in America you know where you just get clogs and you're like this is American it's thanks you've got the nice rolling hills for a lot of wine-growing around grab a bottle never suite got nothing it's sunny day at least it's not raining yeah all right so we finally made it to Bixby Creek Bridge the sun's gonna be going down in about 45 minutes so we have already got enough time to be head and further down towards Big Sur so I think we might try and do that in the morning maybe we're staying up in Monterey which is about 30 minutes from here and then we're heading on to the Bay Area about three hours tomorrow so trying to work it out I think I think we can do it I do really want to see more of Big Sur this whole rugged coastline is just really really impressive and very very sort of dramatic anyway I'm trying to find a shot around here just in time for when the lights gonna go down and yeah should be good in a minute so the big speed Creek Bridge is is pretty famous I believe it was built in the early thirties very Art Deco design and style interestingly though the first time I ever came across it wasn't the actual Bixby bridge but the adaptation of it in Grand Theft Auto so that was where I first came across it and of course knowing how accurate grand theft auto is so when I played in the game I was like I need to find where that is in real life that was I don't know ten years ago or something and come here for a long time and I'm so happy to see it but also interestingly everyone kind of parked over there and you see the the bridge you know in the the rock face and everything I think it looks more interesting from this side and there's no one around me like no one has bothered to walk you know literally two minutes from their car to find a better viewpoint of it yeah so viewing it from this side it's much quieter you've still got the water behind it you can see the bridge almost in its entirety yeah I think it's a much better view of it a bit of foreground interest a little bit of danger I'd say this is definitely up there as one of my favorite bridges she look at bridges this is a good was a tit so I've just walked up all the way around to this viewpoint it's a little bit of a rough terrain but I was able to get some good shots with the long length of 52 140 on my xh1 I've also been interchangeably using my X 100 F to get some wider shots rather than but rather than put in the 23 mole ends on my XH one so that way I can get shots between the two focal lengths without having to change lenses all the time you just walk cameras we've just made it into a Monterey now I'm glad we got to see the Bixby Creek Bridge it's definitely a bridge that I really enjoyed and yeah it's a shame about the rest of California 1 highway but you know it is what it is you just got to check the roads before you come yes so we've just checked into this like motel type thing it was one of the better-looking ones along this strip that I found I booked it not that long ago like literally only a few days ago and we're pretty happy with it it's called the Comfort Inn looks pretty great I was kind of the same prices all the others along this strip but I think this was the one place that just kind of looked better so I booked it looked alright but anyway this kind of concludes the part one of the west coast road trip so if you did enjoy this and you want to catch the future ones then do subscribe to the channel and you'll see this along with some other photography videos and you know some other bits and of course by the time you're watching this is long gone but I think I think we're in for a good trip so I hope you've enjoyed this and I will catch you again soon thanks for watching mmm see you later bye wait bye Ellie okay goodnight
